I recently had a conversation with the sister-in-law of one of our new seniors. She shared a powerful story about her struggles to secure food assistance for her brother-in-law in St. Augustine while she and her husband live far away in Poughkeepsie, New York. After months of effort, including a two-hour intake with another agency, she was finally directed to our program.
When I explained how our program works, including the food he would receive and the twice-monthly wellness checks from our volunteers, she was incredibly moved. She emphasized how challenging it had been to provide care from such a distance, especially after flying in multiple times to stock his pantry with food that could be microwaved due to his mobility limitations. She mentioned the significant expense and constant worry.
Her reaction to our wellness check program was particularly striking; she was highly impressed and noted that there was nothing similar available in New York. She described our program as "amazing."
While we are driven by the inherent good and necessity of our work, it is truly rewarding to receive such positive feedback and know that we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve and their families.
