Why pie??

Sometimes the story of Pie in the Sky is best told by the people who have been part of it from the beginning. One of our board members recently shared why she first got involved, and why she’s still here. Why Pie?

“When Pie in the Sky first began making deliveries, it was truly a family affair. Malea was setting up in her front yard, gathering produce and bread from the farmers market and storing it in an old walk-in cooler on the corner of the yard. Early in the mornings, three or four of us would form an assembly line, filling bags and loading her daughter’s car for deliveries.

Back then, there were only about 10 or 15 seniors receiving food. Then it grew to 25… and kept growing.

I helped bag and deliver for a while, but since I live in Jacksonville, I eventually became an ‘if you need me’ driver as more volunteers joined. Now there are so many willing to help that I don’t deliver anymore, though I truly miss it.

Why did I get involved? Because I wanted to help Malea with something she believed in.

Why do I stay? Because of the people I’ve met, the seniors we serve, and the joy you see in both the volunteers and the recipients. I still remember many of the people on my route. They left a lasting imprint on my heart.
