Pie It Forward : A Story of Community Caring for Community

When the coronavirus pandemic forced Pie in the Sky to pause our weekly produce deliveries, we faced a difficult reality. Our volunteers are often seniors helping seniors, and protecting their health, and the health of the 400+ older adults we served at that time, had to come first.

But the need didn’t disappear. In many ways, it grew.

Many of our seniors were suddenly even more isolated than before. Some had not left their homes in months. For some, the friendly face from Pie in the Sky might have been the only person they saw all week.

So our community did what this community has always done. It stepped up.

With the help of generous community members, we launched Pie It Forward, raising funds to purchase restaurant-prepared meals from beloved local restaurants. At a time when many restaurants were struggling to stay afloat, this effort created a beautiful win-win: supporting local kitchens while delivering gourmet meals to seniors who needed them most.

Since the program began, hundreds of restaurant-style meals have been delivered to seniors across St. Johns County, along with pantry items, fresh conversation, and the reminder that they are not alone.

For many seniors, those moments at the door matter just as much as the meal. A quick chat. A friendly smile. Sometimes even a shared prayer. Because food nourishes the body, but connection nourishes the spirit.

Today, Pie It Forward has also become our way of saying thank you to the individuals, businesses, and organizations whose generosity helps feed seniors with fresh food and dignity all year long.

It isn’t just a thank-you, it’s an experience. Your generosity nourished seniors, and now we’re nourishing you right back.
